One of my favorite cities to take visitors and give them a taste of Slovenia is Ljubljana. We had an amazing afternoon exploring this beautiful capital of Slovenia.
The city is the cultural, scientific, and educational center of the country and has so much to offer for any visitor.
Starting in the city center, which contains a variety of architectural styles including Baroque, Gothic, Venetian, Vienna Secession,
we take a stroll down Mestni Trg where we see many historic buildings, Ljubljana Castle, shops, cafes, and restaurants. We arrive at a large fountain near city center that is cleverly decorated like a ski hat for the winter season!
Soon we arrive at Preserve Square. It is not unusual to find carnivals, concerts and other events at this central meeting point in the oldest part of Ljubljana. Close by is Triple Bridge, which as you might have guessed a series of three bridges. The bridges are part of a pedestrian only zone where one can cross from the modern part of Ljubljana to the older and historic city center.
During our walk, Ljubljana Castle, once a medieval fortress, is visible at the top of the hill next to the historic district.
The castle was originally built in the 11th century and once contained a dungeon! The castle is now used for special events and offers tours to the public.
Next, we walk along the Ljubljana River with its scenic views and many cafes and restaurants to enjoy.
It is getting close to sunset so we make our move to one of Ljubljana’s best places to catch it, the rooftop bar and restaurant at the Hotel Intercontinental where we end our day with delicious appetizers and wine and watch the sun dip behind the mountains surrounding Ljubljana. Here we enjoyed beautiful vistas and great service and another perfect day in Ljubljana!
Conclusion
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a captivating city that offers a rich cultural and architectural experience. From the diverse array of architectural styles in the city center to the historic landmarks like Ljubljana Castle, visitors can immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Exploring the charming streets, enjoying scenic views along the Ljubljanica River, and witnessing a stunning sunset from the rooftop bar at Hotel Intercontinental make for a perfect day in Ljubljana. With its cultural significance, picturesque landscapes, and warm hospitality, Ljubljana is a must-visit destination for those seeking a taste of Slovenia’s beauty and charm.
